Transformer Assembly – Core Lapping

SUMMARY

Perform assembly operations of electrical transformer according to prescribed standard methods and procedures.  Connects coils to terminals and builds up supporting structure of power transformers, according to wiring and structural diagrams: Wraps insulation around coil and secures with adhesive tape. To assemble or modify components as per production schedule.

REQUIREMENTS/QUAILIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Grade 12 Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be in good physical condition: Able to lift up to 50 lbs, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing, and work in a team environment.
  • Ability to interpret read and understand blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications, and bill of material including terms and abbreviations as required to complete work assignments.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Basic Knowledge of hand and power tool use
  • Ability to be certified as a FORK TRUCK OPERATOR and a CRANE OPERATOR;
  • Must be willing to work in other departments on a temporary basis as designated by the manager;
  • Strive for continuous improvement within the work center.
  • Previous manufacturing and/or assembly experience is an asset.
  • Must be available to work all shifts – days, afternoons, midnights (Mandatory).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure and maintain Carte’s quality standards, specifications requirements and procedures.
  • Execute all tasks safely, follow all safety protocols and procedures to protect the employees, equipment and the transformer.
  • Assemble transformers according to specifications, performing any combination of following tasks:

CORE LAPPING

  • Disassembles cores to facilitate lapping to coils and laps cores to coils.
  • Secures cores/coils, using metal strapping, band clippers or metal clamping assemblies.

WIRING

  • Attach wire harness and terminals to core and coil assemblies, according to work order, using hydraulic tools, hand tools, spacers and tie wraps.

TANKING

  • Cleans tanks/covers to remove materials accumulated during production processing.
  • Positions, inserts and attaches transformer core/coil assembly in tank and installs accessories as required from shop order package/work order, to complete assembly of transformers, using pneumatic tools and handtools.
  • Positions and aligns wires and terminals of core/coil assemblies to maintain proper electrical clearance.

PROCESSING

  • Position and operate/monitor heating ovens for dry-out process.
  • Position and monitor transformers in vacuum chamber for vacuum cycle and insulating fluid process.

FINAL ASSEMBLY

  • Reads work order to determine assembly procedure specified by customer.
  • Read and interpret schematic drawings, diagrams, blueprints, specifications, work orders, or reports to determine materials requirements or assembly instructions.
  • Read work orders or other instructions to determine product specifications or materials requirements.
  • Assemble electrical or electronic equipment with blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences.
  • Assemble electrical or electronic systems or support structures and install components, units, subassemblies, wiring, or assembly casings, using rivets, bolts, soldering or micro-welding equipment.
  • Assemble electrical or electronic equipment.
  • Drill or tap holes in specified equipment locations to mount control units or to provide openings for elements, wiring, or instruments.
  • Rework assemblies or transformers with defects.

SKILLS

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Good communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Reliable, punctual, positive team-player who is adaptable, open minded and takes initiative.
  • Communicate problems and/or non-conformances to the manager or appropriate people;
  • Always work as a team member;
