Health and Safety Manager is a pivotal leader responsible for driving compliance and fostering a proactive safety culture. This role involves leading the safety team, working collaboratively with the leadership and management teams, employees, union representatives, contractors and Safe Work Manitoba to resolve safety issues and ensure adherence to all Carte policies, safe work procedures and applicable legislation and regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the health and safety team while providing support to company projects to drive compliance and safety excellence.
- Develop, update and maintain all Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs.
- Coach , mentor and guide managers, lead hands, engineers and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) to ensure compliance.
- Stay updated on all provincial, legislation and regulations ensuring full compliance across all operations.
- Coordinate and conduct injury review processes to identify root causes and implement effective reduction initiatives.
- Track and report performance metrics and lead the joint health and safety committee to foster continuous improvement. Function as the emergency response roll call coordinator, driving business continuity plans and emergency preparedness efforts..
- Oversee the administration and review of Made Safe – Safe Work Certification.
- Lead the investigation of incidents to determine root cause and corrective actions.
- Provide regular statistical reports on all safety incidents and injuries.
- Perfom internal Made Safe audits and liaisee with external Made Safe auditors.
- Conduct internal audits of the Carte Management System as per the Internal Audit plan.
- Represent employer as co-chair of the Workplace Health and Safety Committee and ensure all requirements and documentation is being met.
EXPERIENCE: cRequired
- Minimum 3 years leading a team using a collaborative, team – building approach.
- 3 – 5 years of hands on experience integrating health and safety into operational processes.
- 2 – 3 years experience working in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with injury/accident investigation, workplace inspections and job hazard analysis.
EDUCATION: Required
- BSc. Degree in safety, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field.
- Diploma/ Certification in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Relevant Certifications (CRSP, CRSY, CHSC) or working toward.
OTHER:
- Must have analytical reasoning and problem solving skills.
- Safe Work Certified approved Internal Auditor.
- Advanced knowledge of workplace safety and health legislation and risk assessment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Balanced approach to technical, business and people aspects of business.
- Proven ability to drive change and foster improvements in operations.
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations an asest.
- Familiarity with Lean tools and methodologies.
HUMAN RESOURCES:
- Promote positive departmental environment;
- Evaluate performance. Identify individual performance gaps, create and execute plans for improvement.
- Provide coaching to individual team members as required.
- Ensure the performance is aligned with company, goals , values and objectives, specifically those surrounding safety, quality and productivity.
- Conduct and document regular team meetings to discuss department performance, review new or modified procedures and policies, and present safety talks.
- Participate in selection process, performance review, discipline, and training of safety team.
