Carte International has an exciting opportunity for an experienced, independent, and motivated Mechanical Drafter to join our team in Engineering. As a member of the team, you will work closely with the Engineering team You will participate in team efforts to achieve department goals, complete tasks on time and according to customers specifications.
The Mechanical Drafter provides mechanical design expertise and undertakes a wide range of drafting and mechanical design-related assignments. Basic work is largely focused on customer drawings creation, manufacturing drawings creation, and bill of material creation. The CAD design programs utilized are AutoCAD and Inventor.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preliminary Drafting (as required)
- Research and understand customer specifications, purchase orders, and quotations
- Create outline
s, nameplates, connection wiring diagrams, and transformer component drawings based on customer requirements and approval - Interact with the Quotation Specialist, designer, sales personnel, and purchasing to clear up all design questions through the drawing approval process
- Ensure the design is within cost estimates established in quotation (components, tank size, etc.) and communicate any significant variances with peers before finalizing design
- Ensure design meets all mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements
- Create the package for final drafting
Final Drafting (as required)
- Create all necessary drawings and documentation to allow Manufacturing to build transformers according to the customers’ requirements.
- Finalize bill of material (BoM) and check for accuracy before completing job package
- Complete job packages containing all necessary copies of drawings and documents to be distributed to various production/administration personnel affected
- Follow-up on designs through manufacturing as needed
- Prevent and correct any errors or problems
- Document shop difficulties to allow incorporation of alternate new designs/methods on future jobs
Product Development/Continuous Improvement (as required)
- Suggest design, manufacturing, and system improvements and work with Team Members and other design group peers to implement changes to standard systems in a collective and organized manner.
- Attempt to reduce design time without sacrificing accuracy or deviating from implicit design standards
- Participate in the development of systems and/or computer programs to enhance design productivity, work collectively with peers when system changes are contemplated, and ensure standards are met and the system standardization is being advanced
- Work on projects assigned by the Product Team Manager
Team Planning (as required)
- Follow systems presently in place to document job progress and time allocation.
- Create and/or modify drawings or instructions for other designers as needed to help maintain schedule deadlines.
General
- Respect requirements of operational production schedules with best efforts to complete within the constraints of the team’s resources.
- Complete work assignments and special projects in a timely manner for overall smooth operational performance
- Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers by developing and promoting timely, comprehensive, and courteous service
- Demonstrate lean thinking, providing input and ideas as various lean activities are undertaken and participate in any required lean training
- Participate in mechanical design rule discussions as needed
- Promote quality, health, safety, and operational excellence
- Other duties may be assigned by management from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of post-secondary Drafting program (i.e. Design Drafting Technician, Manufacturing Computer Aided Drafting Certificate) preferred.
- Suitable combination of high school education (grade 12 graduation with drafting major) and/or work experience may also be considered
- Strong mechanical aptitude is required to visualize and execute design elements. Able to explore alternate design scenarios.
- Excellent computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), ERP software (Frontier), AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor experience is preferred but not essential. Basic bill of material knowledge required
- Strong English communication skills in both written and verbal communication
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Lean training: Any lean manufacturing training considered an asset.
- OHS training, WHMIS, emergency evacuation procedures training
- Transformer-related experience and/or metal part design experience are preferred but not essential.
